One sunny morning in Southeast Asia, as I was leaving to go to the market, my neighbor burst out of her apartment and ran straight at me, shrieking and wildly waving two large knives in her hands. Her eyes shone with terror, and I sensed a dark and evil presence. Because I am a Christian, I silently began to pray for protection. As I prayed, the evil spirit was overpowered, and my friend grew calm. She then allowed me to take the knives out of her hands. 

The Power of Jesus 

Thousands have experienced this power of Jesus. They have been released from spirit possession, healed of illnesses, protected from curses, and kept from physical danger. But who is Jesus? What is the nature of His power? The story of Jesus is found in the Christian holy writings, the Bible. Here is one story about His power over evil spirits.

One day, a father brought his son to Jesus. He said, “Teacher, I implore You—look on my son, for he is my only child. A spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth; and it departs from him with great difficulty, bruising him . . . and he often falls into the fire and into the water!” Jesus called the boy to come, but the evil spirit threw the child to the ground and sent him into convulsions.

Jesus’ heart hurt for the father and son. He said, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

The father cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” 

Jesus commanded the evil spirit, “‘Come out of him and enter him no more!’ Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him” (see Luke 9:37–42; Mark 9:17–27).

There are many people like this father who are distressed because spirits are attacking their family members. Some can’t sleep. Some are sick. Some hear strange voices. Some are possessed with superhuman strength and frighten whole villages. But they all desperately want help! 

Here is good news: you can pray to Jesus and ask for protection from evil powers.

Help at No Cost

Many spiritual healers and spirit doctors charge large amounts of money before they will help with these problems. 

Here is more good news: Jesus helps for free. 

In the preceding Bible story, Jesus did not want money from the suffering family. He only wanted them to trust Him. Jesus loves people and yearns to solve their problems, just like good parents want to take care of their children. 

The Bible teaches that Jesus is the Creator of the universe. He came to help the world trust Him again. As the Creator, He has the power to rescue the world from evil, suffering, and death. How? 

The Bible says that there was a time when the universe had no evil, suffering, or death. Everything was perfectly harmonious. But it all changed when one of God’s created angels began a rebellion. This angel was jealous of his Creator. He began to spread lies among the other angels, recruiting one-third of them. Together they accused God of being power-hungry and selfish.

The Creator had a difficult choice to make. If He forced them to stop—or even destroyed them—the other angels and the rest of the universe could think that the false accusations were true. The other choice was to sustain the lives of the rebel angels to allow their evil to become evidence against their accusations. Then, when the time was right, the Creator would end the rebellion. 

After the rebellion began, our first parents disobeyed God’s warnings, allowing the evil angels to claim this world. These angels now deceive and harm human beings. However, the Creator still has more power than these evil angels, and when we ask, He gladly helps us. 

Come to Your Place of Safety

Remember my neighbor who tried to attack me? After she let go of the knives, a terrifying voice spoke through her, claiming to be the spirit of her deceased mother. The evil angel demanded an offering of food. I prayed with others who were with me, asking God to make this evil spirit depart. Finally, the spirit left her, and my neighbor returned to her right mind.

“I never want that to happen again!” she exclaimed. She had experienced the invisible battle between good and evil and wanted to know how to be protected from the dark side. So, I taught her about Jesus and the Bible. She prayed for Jesus to help her give up anger and bitterness toward someone who had hurt her in the past. She also asked the Creator to give her a good heart and to protect her from evil. She did this, and the evil spirits never returned to harass her!

Dear God, I need Your help. Please send away any evil spirits from my life. Give me a new heart and send holy angels to protect me. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
